Episode 42: Does it "Merit" a Weather Badge?

Minh and Castle are joined by Christina Edwards, who will enlighten us on how the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts earn their badges and how recent changes can affect weather and STEM education.

Scouts Event at AMS WeatherFest

The program will teach Scouts about meteorology and give them an understanding of the weather phenomena in the Austin area. The program will also introduce Scouts to weather-related emergency preparedness.
All Scouts—both boys and girls—will be learning aspects of meteorology and emergency management to become better prepared for weather-related natural disasters. Scouts will engage in one-on-one activities with professional meteorologists from the National Weather Service and the local media, atmospheric science researchers, and local emergency managers. During this program, Scouts will learn how to interpret symbols on a weather map, discover the differences between various weather alerts and how the public receives them, discuss what items need to be in an emergency kit, determine ways families and communities can be prepared in the event of a weather emergency, and more.

Share the Love with Girls on the Run of Coastal Georgia

Every month, we highlight an organization or cause and encourage our listeners to donate whatever they can to help.

This month, we're giving to "Girls on the Run of Coastal Georgia."

At Girls on the Run we inspire girls to recognize their inner strength and celebrate what makes them one of a kind. Trained coaches lead small teams through our research-based curricula which includes dynamic discussions, activities and running games. Over the course of the ten-week program, girls in 3rd-8th grade develop essential skills to help them navigate their worlds and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness. The program culminates with girls positively impacting their communities through a service project and being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5K event.
